Receiving your dental exams and X-rays are usually the first step towards getting dental treatment. Dentists use these tools to help diagnose any potential problems and develop a treatment plan. At Feeding Hills Dental Care, we pride ourselves on keeping our valued patients up to date with all the latest dental technology and treatments, so we can provide personalized care and healthy smiles.
During a dental exam, the dentist will use a small, hand-held mirror to examine all surfaces of your teeth. They will also use a pick or other instrument to check for any decay between your teeth. Once they have completed the visual examination, they will take X-rays of your teeth. X-rays help your dentist spot problems that can't be seen with the naked eye, such as decay between your teeth, problems with your tooth roots, bone loss, impacted teeth, and more. The dentist will then share with you any findings from the X-ray images.
The whole process, from start to finish, usually takes less than 30 minutes, which is why more often than not exam and
cleaning appointments are combined. The X-ray portion of your visit only takes a couple of minutes, during which captures will be taken from several angles. Your oral exam will only take a few minutes as well. You can expect a short discussion over what your dentist or hygienist found during the exam. The whole process is pretty quick and painless!
Most dental insurance plans will cover at least one dental exam and X-ray per year. Some plans may cover additional exams and X-rays, depending on your individual needs. If you're unsure whether or not your insurance plan covers dental exams and X-rays, contact your insurance company to find out. You can also ask us any questions about cost and payment you may have, and we’ll be happy to help!
At Feeding Hills Dental Care, we recommend that all our patients have a dental exam and X-ray at least once per year. We offer convenient scheduling, work with many insurance plans, and can help address any concerns or anxieties you may have. By taking preventive measures, you can benefit from catching problems early with a number of solutions at your disposal.

Dental exams are crucial for maintaining oral health. They allow dentists to detect problems early, such as cavities, gum disease, and other oral health issues. Regular exams can prevent these conditions from worsening and leading to more complex and expensive treatments.
The American Dental Association recommends that individuals visit their dentist at intervals determined by a dentist, even if it’s just for routine exams. This frequency can vary based on your oral health status, age, and risk for dental disease, but most people benefit from a dental exam every six months.
During a dental exam, your dentist will thoroughly inspect your teeth, gums, and mouth for signs of decay, gum disease, and other health issues. They may also evaluate your bite and jaw for any problems. Additionally, the exam may include a discussion about your diet, oral hygiene habits, and any lifestyle factors that could affect your oral health.
Dental X-rays are taken to provide a detailed picture of your teeth, bones, and soft tissues around them, helping to detect problems not visible during a regular dental exam. This can include hidden cavities, impacted teeth, jawbone damage, and cysts or tumors.
Dental X-rays emit very low levels of radiation and are considered safe for most people when appropriate safety measures are used. Dentists take precautions, such as using lead aprons and modern, fast film or digital X-rays, to minimize exposure.
While you have the right to refuse dental X-rays, it’s important to understand that they are a critical tool in diagnosing oral health issues that might not be detectable during a visual examination. Discuss any concerns with your dentist; they can explain the risks and benefits to help you make an informed decision.
